Karat

In the vocabulary of the gold trade, Karat means this: A measure of gold purity in 24ths; 24 karat is pure gold, 22 karat is 91.6 percent, 21 karat is 87.5 percent and 18 karat is 75 percent. For anyone buying or selling gold from Guyana into Dubai, reading this term correctly is the difference between a clean transaction and a costly misunderstanding.

Karat does not stand alone. In a real deal it sits alongside Fineness, Millesimal and Hallmark, and following those connections is how a professional reads an offer from the first quote to final settlement.

In practice you might see it used like this: "The Gulf souks trade 22 karat as the jewellery standard." That is exactly how Karat appears in real Guyana-to-Dubai deals, where value is always confirmed on assayed content rather than a stated figure, and payment follows inspection.
